Catalan Oncology Center Advances Radiotherapy Planning with Elekta

The Catalan Oncology Centre in Perpignan, part of Stingray Healthcare Group, has been featured by Elekta for its advances in radiotherapy planning, demonstrating how innovative technology can improve treatment efficiency and support more personalized cancer care.

The feature highlights the centre experience with Elekta ONE Planning, introduced in November 2025, alongside Elekta Evo and its AI-enhanced Iris imaging technology. Together, these technologies are helping the clinical team streamline radiotherapy treatment planning, impove daily workflows and advance its adaptive radiotherapy capabilities.

Improving Radiotherapy Planning Efficiency

Radiotherapy planning requires detailed calculations to ensure radiation is delivered accurately to the target area while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

At the Catalan Oncology Centre, the introduction of Elekta ONE Planning has significantly reduced the time required to complete complex treatment calculations.

According to Vincent Plagnol, Medical Physicist at the centre, calculations that previously took two to three hours can now be completed in less than 10 minutes, representing an approximately 60-fold reduction in computation time.

This improvement has also a positive impact on the centre’s daily clinical workflows. When the system was introduced, the team had approximately 100 pending treatment plans and contouring tasks. This backlog has been eliminated, allowing patients to undergo imaging in the morning, with contouring and treatment planning potentially completed on the same day.

Advancing AI-Supported and Adaptive

Beyond improving planning efficiency, the centre is continuing to develop its capabilities in adaptive radiotherapy, an approach that allows treatment plans to be adjusted in response to changes in a patient’s pathway during treatment.

Currently, the team uses uses offline adaptive radiotherapy supported by Elekta Evo and its AI-enhanced Iris imaging technology. This enables clinicians to assess treatment delivery, monitor radiation exposure to surrounding organs and determine wheather adjustments to the original treatment plan are necessary.

AI-assisted contouring withtin Elekta ONE Planning also helps automate certain planning tasks, allowing clinical professionals to dedicate more time to complex decisions.

Building on these developments, the centre is preparing to introduce online adaptive radiotherapy, which would allow treatment plans to be adjusted during individual treatment sessions. The initial focus will be on treatments involving the male pelvis, with potential expansion to other anatomical areas.

Supporting the Continued Development of Cancer Care

The progress achieved at the Catalan Oncology Center demonstrates how combining clinical expertise with advanced radiotherapy technology can improve treatment planning processes and support the development of more personalised cancer care.

As part of Stingray Healthcare’s European network, the Catalan Oncology Centre continues to strengthen its clinical capabilities, reflecting the Group’s commitment to advancing high-quality cancer treatment across its centres.
